Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. are developing the
next-generation electric vehicle (EV) batteries that can reduce charging time and
expand the range of green cars, according to a report on Thursday.

Some sources said that the two of the biggest Japanese automakers
are separately planning to produce solid-state batteries. They are considered
safe with a lower risk of battery leakage and can be charged in just few
minutes, compared with more common lithium ion EV batteries,
which usually take more than 10 minutes.
With their greater capacity, EV batteries
will also increase the mileage per charge, the sources added.
According to a Honda executive, the solid-state battery “has a
huge potential” to become the key to boosting EV.
The automaker is considering working with other companies to create
car batteries, but technical difficulties remain for mass production.
"We've been researching all solid-state batteries," Teruhiko
Tatebe, a Honda spokesperson, said.
"At the moment we're not developing them with another
automaker."
The moves come as the competition to produce emission-free cars
and EV technologies continues to intensify across the world amid
tighter regulations.
The leading automaker in Japan, Toyota Motor Corp., is also developing
an EV battery as well.
"As a mass-market automaker we need to expand our offering of
electric cars," the Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Corp.,
Shigeki Terashi said.
"To promote the wider use of EVs, we need to increase our
technical development capabilities and address the societal impact of the
technology."
Toyota stated last week that it is in talks with Panasonic Corp.
to team up on developing and producing the lithium ion and next-generation
solid-state batteries.
As of now, Toyota has a team of 200 people working on developing
its solid-state battery. The automaker is planning to install it in cars in the
first half of the 2020s.
Honda has not specified a date when they will release their next-generation battery. However, Nissan is aiming to put its next-generation battery into use in the latter half of the 2020s.
