Nvidia, a Santa Clara-based technology company, has partnered with Volkswagen, Baidu in China, and Uber in driverless cars, as the chipmaker plans to expand its presence in the autonomous driving space.

Uber, Volkswagen and Baidu will be using Nvidia chips to create autonomous cars.

According to the statement of the companies at the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas on Sunday, the ride-hailing service, Uber, will be using Nvidia’s chips for its artificial intelligence computing system in its fleet of self-driving cars.

The Santa Clara-based technology company makes graphics computing chips, which are key components of the autonomous cars setup.

In 2015, the ride-hailing company started working with self-driving technology. It has launched trials in Pittsburgh, PA, and Phoenix, Arizona. Uber stated that its driverless cars have accomplished more than 50,000 passenger trips and have logged over 2 million autonomous miles.

The graphics computing technology of Nvidia was used in the first test fleet of Volvo XC90 SUVs that the ride-hailing company was using. Uber is also using the technology in its current fleet of self-driving cars and freight trucks.

Nvidia also announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that the company partnered with Volkswagen.

Volkswagen will be using the Nvidia Drive IX platform to help develop its next set of automobiles.

The Nvidia Drive IX allows carmakers to place features in the car, including facial recognition to unlock the vehicle, gesture controls, and a voice assistant.

The German automaker stated that it would be using the software to make an “intelligent co-pilot” to assist a driver. This concept will be in the automaker’s I.D. Buzz vehicle, which is a retro-styled microbus.

Nvidia also announced on Sunday the plans to create a production-ready AI autonomous car system designed for China, in collaboration with Baidu, a Chinese internet giant and ZF, a German car parts maker.

Nvidia Xavier platform, a chip and software system that allows autonomous driving to add special features. Last year, Xavier was teased, but the announcement of Baidu is the first real commercial application.

The autonomous car system made by the three-automaker companies will be using Xavier from Nvidia, the autonomous software of Baidu, which is called Apollo Pilot, and ZF’s sensors and cameras.
